Sometimes it just hurts to be a nurse. Losing a patient doesn’t get easier, and it shouldn’t. It hurts. Even when you saw what was coming, it still feels as though you could have done more. Sometimes it’s difficult to be a nurse, when a colleague loses a patient, and your heart breaks for them. Sometimes it’s emotionally draining to be a nurse, when a trusted coworker stabs you in the back – and you never saw that coming. Sometimes it’s frustrating, that despite the never ending 12 hour shift, you cannot physically do as much as you want to do for your patients. Oftentimes it’s shattering when it dawns on you at 4am what you might have done alternatively. Sometimes your soul aches as you sit and cry with the family who just lost their loved one, and oftentimes it’s worse when you see a family member who is just inexplicably mean to your patient, as you’ve seen too many times how quickly life can be snatched away. Sometimes it’s the mistakes you make that could have (but thankfully didn’t) harm the patient that will haunt you. Oftentimes it’s the apathy of other health care professionals that will tear at your heart. Apathy is the worst of all.
